If you would like to get an experience of medieval Wales, Fonmon Castle in the Vale of Glamorgan is another example of some of the great places to visit in Wales. To get to the castle, coming from Cardiff City, follow the signs to the airport, and continue straight on towards Llantwit Major, then pass under a bridge and follow the brown tourism signs which will take you to the left of the main road and along some narrow country lanes.
Fonmon Castle is used throughout the year for wedding and other events, but there is much more...
From April to September, the castle is open to the public, and there are guided tours during the afternoon at 2, 3 and 4pm at a price (at the time of writing) of around £5.50 per head. It is well worth having the tour with fascinating stories from your guide of the former occupants of the castle whose portrait paintings adorn the grandiose walls that go way back to medieval times and include many famous historical aristocrats. The time of the next available tour is usually displayed on the entrance door, but you may like a walk around the beautiful gardens which is free of charge, whilst waiting for your guide to appear.
The gardens were formed as the need for the outer defenses against attacking enemies became redundant, and now cover around 1½ acres. As a amateur gardener myself, I found that a visit to Fonmon Castle's garden inspired me to get out and work in my garden at home - well, for a while!
Fonmon Castle was originally built by the St John family back in the early 13th Century, but is still lived in to this day. In the mid 17th Century, at around the time of the civil war, it was bought by Colonel Philip Jones and has remained in the family ever since with his direct descendant, Sir Brooke Boothby in resident there now.
As well are being a great place for the tourist, Fonmon Castle with its romantic setting can be hired for weddings. Also being only around 15-16 miles from Cardiff city and so near the Cardiff Wales Airport, it is often used for business, corporate meetings
